Choosing the Music for Your Wedding

Music is an important element of a wedding service and there is a wide variety of music, hymns and worship songs to choose from. Our organist is available to provide music for you service and we also have an excellent sound system for playing your choice of CDs and MP3 tracks. You are of course also welcome to invite other musicians to play for your service.

Hymns

It’s traditional to sing either two or three hymns during the wedding service. When choosing a hymn it’s usually best to stick to ones that most people are likely to know, otherwise you may be the only two people singing! You will also want to consider when choosing hymns whether the words are saying the things you want them to.

One last thing on hymns. Some hymns can be sung to more than one tune so it’s worth checking with us to make sure that the tune our organist is planning to play is the one that you have in mind.

Hymns that are popular choices for weddings include:

  • Alleluia! Sing to Jesus
  • Popular choices for wedding hymns include:
  • Come down O love divine
  • Dear Lord and Father of Mankind
  • Lord of all hopefulness
  • Love divine all loves excelling
  • Jesus I have promised
  • Praise to the Lord, the Almighty the King of creation
  • Praise my soul the King of heaven

Click here to listen to a selection of well loved wedding hymns on the Church of England's weddings website.

The priest who is conducting your wedding service will be able to advise you on appropriate places to include the hymns within your wedding service. The church has hymn books available for use in your service or a printed order of service can be used. Hymn books can be borrowed from church to help you make your selection.

Instrumental Music

As well as hymns you will probably want to have some instrumental music at certain points in the service such as:

  • The entrance of the bride
  • During the signing of the registers
  • When you leave church as a married couple at the end of the service

Our organist can play this music for you or you could have appropriate music played from CD on our sound system.

For the bride’s entrance

Music for this moment might be gentle, dramatic, emotional and touching, but always positive. These are some popular, classic pieces:

  • Clair de Lune, Debussy
  • Canon in D, Pachelbel
  • Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, from ‘Solomon’, Handel
  • Trumpet Voluntary, aka the Prince of Denmark’s March, Jeremiah Clarke
  • Salut D’Amour, Elgar
  • Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin, Wagner
  • Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, J S Bach

Most of these pieces of music (and those below) are available on Youtube if you want to hear what they sound like.

For signing the register

You, your family and your two witnesses will move to the chancel of the church to sign the register. It is a moment of pause in the ceremony and music is often played at this point.

There are no pieces of music that are traditionally associated with the signing of the registers so this time provides a good opportunity to choose music that is meaningful to you both.

For leaving the church

Music for this part of your ceremony is always upbeat and cheerful. These are some popular, traditional classics, but you can talk to your vicar if you’d like something different:-

  • Clair de Lune, Debussy
  • Canon in D, Pachelbel
  • Trumpet Voluntary, aka the Prince of Denmark’s March, Jeremiah Clarke
  • Wedding March- Incidental Music No.9 from Midsummer Night’s Dream, Mendelssohn
  • Salut D’Amour, Elgar
  • Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, J S Bach
  • Toccata from Widor’s 5th Symphony in F
